چکیده

Alternatives to hypochlorous acid and fungicides are needed for treatment of fruit and fruit-handling facilities. Chlorine dioxide was evaluated and found effective against common postharvest decay fungi and against filamentous fungi occurring on fruit packinghouse surfaces. In vitro tests with conidial or sporangiospore suspensions of Botrytis cinerea, Penicillium expansum, Mucor piriformis, and Cryptosporiopsis perennans demonstrated >99% spore mortality within 1 min when the fungi were exposed to aqueous chlorine dioxide at 3 or 5 mug . ml. Longer exposure times were necessary to achieve similar spore mortalities with 1 mug . ml. Of the fungi tested, B. cinerea and P. expansum were the least sensitive to ClO(2). In comparison with the number recovered from untreated control areas, the number of filamentous fungi recovered was significantly lower in swipe tests from hard surfaces such as belts and pads in a commercial apple and pear packinghouse after treatment of surfaces with a 14.0- to 18.0-mug . ml ClO(2) foam formulation. Chlorine dioxide has desirable properties as a sanitizing agent for postharvest decay management when residues of postharvest fungicides are not desired or allowed.

Using aqueous chlorine dioxide to prevent contamination of tomatoes with Salmonella enterica and erwinia carotovora during fruit washing.

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is an antimicrobial agent recognized for its disinfectant properties. In this study, the sanitizing effects of ClO2 solutions against Salmonella enterica and Erwinia carotovora in water, on tomato surfaces, and between loads of tomatoes were evaluated. In water, ClO2 at 5, 10, and 20 ppm caused a > or = 5-log reduction of S. enterica within 6, 4, and 2 s, respectively. H...

Biological Control of Postharvest Fruit Pathogens in Papaya

First of all, since the area of biological control is so vast, I will be restricting my talk to the area of biocontrol of postharvest fruit pathogens. Fungicides are a primary means of controlling postharvest diseases. However, as a result of public concern about the presence of synthetic chemicals in our food supply and environment, several fungicides have been banned by the U. S. Environmenta...

Chlorine dioxide dose, water quality and temperature affect the oxidative status oftomato processing water and its ability to inactivate Salmonella

Water disinfection is a vital control-point to minimize transmission of diverse pathogens from water sources or produce within and among lots at harvest, during initial postharvest handling, and within subsequent postharvest re-packing and processing. The use of ClO2 as an alternative to NaClO for water disinfection is being adopted by the fresh tomato postharvest handling industry. Lack of dat...

Effect of Pomegranate Peel Extract on Green (Penicillium digitaum) and Blue Molds (P. italicum) of Mandarin Fruit

The global trend has shifted towards the reduction of synthetic pesticide application in agriculture in general and in postharvest in particular. Currently there is a growing interest in using natural antifungal compounds, like plant extracts for the preservation of foods. In order to develop fungicide formulation of natural origin as postharvest treatments, this study was conducted on the anti...

Increasing Shelf Life and Maintaining Quality of Mango by Postharvest Treatments and Packaging Technique

This experiment was carried out to increase the shelf life and maintaining the quality of mango (Mangifera indica) fruits. There were two factors. Factor A: postharvest treatments with six levels (1. untreated (control), 2. washing with chlorine, 3. dipping (5 minutes) in calcium chloride (CaCl2), 4. dipping (5 minutes) in bavistin and rinse in clean water, 5. hot water treatment and 6. tap wat...
